Current offers focusing on stuttering

  • 10-day summer camp for stuttering teenagers and young adults

Since 2000, the charming region around Lake Steinhude has been hosting an annual summer camp for stuttering teenagers and young adults aged between 14 and 30, based on the Hanover model.  The focus is on participants engaging with themselves and their own communication behaviour. This is observed, reflected upon and practised in a variety of situations, accompanied and supported by expert therapists and students from Leibniz University Hanover.

The ten-day intensive stuttering therapy programme includes speech therapy sessions as well as activities such as excursions to and around Lake Steinhude, improvisational theatre, radio play or film production, and sports activities such as football, table tennis, yoga, etc. The camp offers plenty of opportunity for personal experiences in dialogue with others, for exchanges with different conversation partners, and for trying out new communication behaviours.

The therapeutic approach is evaluated and continuously developed as part of master's theses and other research projects. Further information about the summer camp is available at http://www.stottertherapie-hannover.de/.

  • Follow-up camp

A follow-up camp takes place once a year for five days during the autumn holidays in Lower Saxony. It is aimed at those who have already participated in the summer camp. In tutor and tandem systems with students from the SKT Master's programme, the contents of the summer camp are refreshed, difficulties in implementing them in everyday life are discussed, and the individual strategies developed in the summer camp are adapted and further developed. In the follow-up camp, participants are supported by therapists and students in practising what they have learned in various situations, including with unfamiliar conversation partners or in public, and in optimising their individual strategies for more fluent speech. Further information can be found here: http://www.stottertherapie-hannover.de/

  • Skype-Follow-up

Following the summer camp, the content of the summer camp can be consolidated and individually revised in regular Skype sessions. Students from the SKT degree programme's counselling module are available as tandem and communication partners. People from the participants' everyday environment, such as relatives or friends, are included in the Skype sessions as supporters.

  • The summer camp trainings CD

The summer camp training CD summarises the key elements of the therapy and provides exercises for each of the main areas of focus. Students receive the CD in preparation for the intensive therapy, and camp participants receive it as an additional follow-up resource. The CD is also available to therapists and those affected by the condition independently of the summer camp.

  • The summer camp trainings DVD

Like the CD, the new summer camp training DVD contains various exercises covering the essential content of the therapy and its different focal points. It offers those affected both auditory and visual assistance for independent practice and can therefore be used as a supplementary aftercare service by summer camp participants. What makes the summer camp training DVD special is that the summer camp participants themselves played a key role in designing the DVD and present and guide the individual sequences.
