Places for stays abroad are allocated during the winter semester.

Further information on the application process is provided at an event for students of special education and educational sciences, which always takes place in November. You should attend this event if you are planning a stay during the winter semester of the following year or the subsequent summer semester.

The IfS recommends that you go abroad from your 5th BA semester onwards. Planning a semester abroad involves a lot of organization and should be started as early as possible (usually 1-1.5 years before the stay). You can therefore start planning from the 3rd semester onwards.

Application process

Applications for a stay abroad with the Erasmus+ program are submitted via the exchange coordinators at the institutes themselves.
At the IfS, you must submit the following documents (the deadline for exchange places in the 2026/2027 winter semester and 2027 summer semester is January 9, 2026—please only apply after the information event, i.e., from November 5, 2025):

Letter of motivation in English, including your first, second, and third choices for a host university. Please provide detailed reasons for all three choices!
short CV
Transcript of Records
Language Certificate. To apply for the exchange program, all you need is a placement test from the Leibniz Language Center or a copy of your high school diploma!
General advice for applicants
  • Please ensure that your application documents are complete. Include all documents mentioned in the information event and on the homepage, otherwise your application cannot be considered!
  • Please note the deadline for submitting your documents. Applications received after this date cannot be considered! The deadline also applies to applications to EULiST universities and other Erasmus+ universities that are partnered with LUH and where you can study special education and/or educational sciences. If you want to apply for a place at these universities, submit exactly the same documents as for the specific partner universities of the IfS and IfBE to the exchange coordinators!
  • When reviewing your application documents, we pay particular attention to your professional/academic reasons for choosing the partner universities you have selected. Furthermore, proof of appropriate language skills is particularly important. Please focus on these aspects in particular!
  • Please be aware that we only have a limited number of places available (at all partner universities) and usually have to allocate them by lottery. Consider whether EULiST universities or other Erasmus+ universities might also be suitable for you. Please also check with the International Office!
  • Please clarify any further questions that could not be answered during the information event with Dr. Henrike Engels during office hours or by email BEFORE you apply! If necessary, please also speak to our colleagues at the International Office.
