  • Which semester is best for studying abroad?

Please note: At the IfS, students can start planning their stay abroad from the third semester onwards. It is recommended that you have completed your basic studies (preferably modules A-D) before going abroad. Applying in the first semester is therefore not advisable and will not be considered due to a lack of academic knowledge.

Stays abroad are recommended for the various degree programs in the following semesters:

    Bachelor's

    • 5th or 6th semester (depending on the minor subject)
    • Generally not before the 5th semester (only possible in individual cases, e.g., for lateral entry or credit transfer for many courses)

    Master's

    • 2nd or 4th semester (3rd or 5th semester also possible in some cases)
    • 1st semester of the master's program is not a good option due to the large number of courses
    • 3rd semester only after consultation (N-project must be brought forward)
    • 4th semester possible, taking into account the MA thesis (it may be necessary to bring forward the N-presentation)
  • Which courses can be credited?

IMPORTANT: Please ALWAYS discuss the credits in the respective modules with the module coordinators in advance and have the credits confirmed in writing. Lists of the current module coordinators can be found on our website under “Downloads/Documents for the degree program” or on the “Courses” page.

    The following are eligible:

    Bachelor's

    5th semester

    • E.2, E.3
    • I.1
    • (possibly G.1 and G.2) Credit transfer usually possible

    6th semester

    •  I.2 can be credited
    • BA accompanying seminar cannot be credited or brought forward
    • BA thesis can be started after the stay and, if necessary, completed in the 1st master's semester
    • G internship can be brought forward (during the semester or as a summer school)

Courses in educational sciences, psychology, and, if applicable, the second subject can also be recognized after consultation with the contact persons at the institutes.

    Master of Education

    2nd semester

    • J.1, J.2 can be credited for FS Learning/ESE, but not for GE/Language.
    • K.3 must be clarified individually with lecturers.
    • N.1 should be taken early or made up later.

    3rd semester

    • N.2, M.1, and M.2 cannot be brought forward or credited

    4th semester

    • MA thesis: same procedure as for BA thesis
    • N presentation: bring forward or, if necessary, possible online

    MA

    • SKT: discuss individually with lecturers, credit transfer usually not possible
    • LE: credit transfer of LE 1.1 or LE 1.2 possible

In addition, courses in psychology and educational science (and in some cases also from the second subject) can also be recognized in the BA and MEd. The contact persons at the relevant institute are then responsible for the credit transfer.

If you have any further questions about credit transfer, please contact Dr. Engels.

  • How many credits do I need to earn at the partner university?

Erasmus+-Outgoings need to earn 10 ECTS (credits) abroad to get the Erasmus mobility allowance. It is not important, if you want to get courses credited at the IfS.

  • What kind of courses can I attend abroad?
    •     Courses from the field of study or related to the field of study (special needs education or educational sciences) at least 50%
    •     Language course(s) (also counts toward ECTS)
    •     Other courses, if applicable (key competencies, etc.)

The following applies specifically to special needs education:

    •     Courses in the field of professionalization (e.g., psychology, educational science), if applicable
    •     Courses in the minor subject (e.g., general studies, music), if applicable. This is not possible for all subjects, as some subjects have their own         exchange programs (e.g., German). Cannot always be credited

  • Is it possible to spend a semester at other universities?

Within the Erasmus+ program, students can visit partner universities through their minor subject institute.

Universities within and outside the EU can be visited through alternative exchange programs or as a freemover on your own initiative.

Funding opportunities include Leibniz PROMOS, DAAD programs, ISEP - International Student Exchange Program for stays in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, Fulbright scholarships, and many more. Contact persons and information can be found at the website of the International Office.

There you will also find a database with LUH's partner universities.

  • Is it possible to complete internships abroad?

Alternatively, internships abroad can be completed in consultation with the internship coordinators of the IfS. The respective requirements must be taken into consideration (e.g., Bachelor's degree: D-observation internship, Master of Education: P.1.1 -supportive diagnostic internship and P. 2. 1-special education teaching internship; MA Special Education: LE 7.1 Project Internship). Further information on internships can be found on this overview page or under the “Downloads” section for the respective degree programs.

Internships abroad must generally be organized by the students themselves. Funding is available through the International Office. For internships within the EU, please refer to this website. Information on internships outside the EU can be found here (information only in German!).

Further information on completing school internships abroad can be found on the website of the Leibniz School of Education.

The Leibniz School of Education also supports you in your search for internships and provides information on possible internship programs on its homepage.
