In the Department of the Didactics of Symbol Systems German we deal with the symbol system language from a linguistic and ontogenetic point of view and focus on the research of in-school and out-of-school conditions and processes of the children’s acquisition of written (language) and literacy in the context of heterogeneity. The department’s work areas include, for example, the investigation of early childhood processes of attaining literacy in the family, the development and evaluation of concepts for the promotion of monolingual and multilingual language and written language acquisition in kindergartens and schools, the linguistic analysis and systematization of children’s literature for the inclusive teaching of German, and the development of materials for the promotion of reading and spelling.
